Best Claude Skills (2026): The 12 Worth Installing First

Updated: November 2026 · 12 min read · By the CreatorSprout team

Roundup based on the official Anthropic skills repo and the community repos linked below, all read on November 3, 2026. Star counts are GitHub stars as read on that date and will have moved since. We have not hands-on tested every skill here, so this article reports what each repo publishes about itself. No affiliate links in this article.

What is a Claude Skill?

A Claude Skill is Anthropic's format for teaching Claude a repeatable job. In Anthropic's own words: "Skills are folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that Claude loads dynamically to improve performance on specialized tasks." Each skill is a folder built around a SKILL.md file; instead of pasting the same long prompt into every chat, you package the instructions, scripts and resources once, and Claude loads them when a task matches.

The official home is the anthropics/skills repo. As read on November 3, 2026, its skills/ folder listed exactly 19 skills: academy-guide, algorithmic-art, brand-guidelines, canvas-design, claude-api, discernment-nudge, doc-coauthoring, docx, frontend-design, internal-comms, mcp-builder, pdf, pptx, skill-creator, slack-gif-creator, theme-factory, web-artifacts-builder, webapp-testing and xlsx. The repo itself had 186,970 stars on that date.

The licence split inside that repo matters and is easy to miss: many of the skills are open source under Apache 2.0, but the document creation and editing skills — docx, pdf, pptx and xlsx — are, in Anthropic's words, "source-available, not open source." You can read and use them as Anthropic provides them; you cannot treat them as ordinary open-source code.

How to install the official skills

In Claude Code, the official skills install as plugins:

  • First: /plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
  • Then: /plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills for the document pack, or /plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills for the examples.

Outside Claude Code, the official repo says the example skills are "all already available to paid plans in Claude.ai" — Anthropic's wording is "paid plans," and the repo text does not name a specific plan tier. Pre-built and custom skills are also usable through the Claude API. The picks below note, per skill, what each one needs and what its licence actually is.

Star counts quoted in the entries below are as read on GitHub on November 3, 2026.

1. Document Skills pack — docx / pdf / pptx / xlsx (Anthropic, official)

What it does: Creates, edits and analyses the four file formats creators and small businesses live in. The docx skill works with Word documents "with support for tracked changes, comments, formatting preservation, and text extraction"; pdf is a "comprehensive PDF manipulation toolkit" covering merging and splitting documents and handling forms; pptx builds presentations with "layouts, templates, charts"; and xlsx handles spreadsheets with "formulas, formatting, data analysis, and visualization."

Who it's for: Anyone who sends clients documents, decks, reports or spreadsheets — this is the most immediately useful pack on the list if your work ends in files rather than code.

Where to get it: The skills/docx, skills/pdf, skills/pptx and skills/xlsx folders in github.com/anthropics/skills, or via the Claude Code plugin install in the section above.

Licence / cost: Source-available, not open source (see the licence split explained above). Using the official skills runs through a paid Claude.ai plan, the Claude Code plugin, or the API, per the repo's access notes.

2. Superpowers — obra/superpowers

What it does: "A complete software development methodology for your coding agents, built on top of a set of composable skills." The workflow runs brainstorming, then git worktrees, writing-plans, subagent-driven development or executing-plans, test-driven development (RED-GREEN-REFACTOR), requesting-code-review, and finishing-a-development-branch.

Who it's for: Indie builders shipping real products with a coding agent, who want process discipline instead of one-shot prompts.

Where to get it: github.com/obra/superpowers — 311,549 stars as read on November 3, 2026, making it the largest community skills framework on this list. For Claude Code: /plugin install superpowers@claude-plugins-official; its README also lists installs for many other agent harnesses.

Licence: MIT.

3. Skills for Real Engineers — mattpocock/skills

What it does: Matt Pocock's own daily-driver set: "My agent skills that I use every day to do real engineering — not vibe coding." Flagship skills include /grill-me and /grill-with-docs (alignment interviews), /tdd, /diagnosing-bugs, /to-spec and /improve-codebase-architecture.

Who it's for: Solo builders who want a smaller, more composable, opinionated set focused on engineering fundamentals — often the easier first install next to Superpowers.

Where to get it: github.com/mattpocock/skills — 310,826 stars as read on November 3, 2026, almost tied with Superpowers. Install given as claude plugin install mattpocock-skills@claude-plugins-official, plus a one-time /setup-matt-pocock-skills per repo.

Licence: MIT.

4. skill-creator (Anthropic, official)

What it does: An "interactive skill creation tool that guides you through building new skills with Q&A." Instead of hand-writing a SKILL.md from scratch, it interviews you and assembles the skill with you.

Who it's for: Creators with a repeat process — show notes, sponsor reads, thumbnail briefs, client reports — who want that process packaged once and reused. This is the on-ramp to making your own skills instead of only installing other people's.

Where to get it: The skills/skill-creator folder in github.com/anthropics/skills.

Licence: Follows the official repo baseline — most non-document skills in the repo are Apache 2.0 open source.

5. frontend-design (Anthropic, official)

What it does: "Instructs Claude to avoid 'AI slop' or generic aesthetics and to make bold design decisions. Works very well for React & Tailwind."

Who it's for: Anyone shipping landing pages, lead magnets or product sites that must not look like template AI output. It pairs well with Hallmark (No. 7), which explicitly cites frontend-design as inspiration.

Where to get it: The skills/frontend-design folder in github.com/anthropics/skills.

Licence: Apache 2.0, per the official repo baseline for non-document skills.

6. Claude SEO — AgriciDaniel/claude-seo

What it does: A "universal SEO skill for Claude Code" with 26 sub-skills and 19 sub-agents covering technical SEO, E-E-A-T, schema, GEO/AEO, agent readiness, backlinks, local SEO, e-commerce, international SEO, Google APIs, and PDF/Excel reporting.

Who it's for: Creators and small businesses who want site audits run inside the tool they already use, with direct revenue relevance.

Where to get it: github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo — 26,168 stars as read on November 3, 2026. Install: /plugin marketplace add AgriciDaniel/claude-seo, then /plugin install claude-seo@agricidaniel-claude-seo.

Licence / cost: MIT. It needs Claude Code 1.0.33 or newer, and its README's pricing section says "Free, with your Claude Code plan."

7. Hallmark — Nutlope/hallmark

What it does: "A design skill for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode that refuses to look AI-generated" — 50 themes, redesign and audit modes (/hallmark redesign, /hallmark audit), and a linter for "AI slop" tells. It was No. 1 on GitHub Trending weekly as fetched on November 3, 2026.

Who it's for: Creators and builders whose pages, decks or product sites keep coming out looking generically AI-made.

Where to get it: github.com/Nutlope/hallmark — 46,506 stars as read on November 3, 2026. Published by Nutlope (Together AI, per its README). Install: npx skills add nutlope/hallmark -g (Node 18+; browser checks need puppeteer-core and Chrome).

Licence: MIT.

8. claude-mem — thedotmack/claude-mem

What it does: "Persistent Context Across Sessions for Every Agent — captures everything your agent does during sessions, compresses it with AI, and injects relevant context back into future sessions." It includes a mem-search skill and MCP search tools. Strictly, it is a plugin and memory system that ships skills rather than a single SKILL.md folder, so treat it as a skills-adjacent pack.

Who it's for: Heavy Claude Code users whose projects span many sessions and who lose time re-briefing the agent every morning.

Where to get it: github.com/thedotmack/claude-mem — 111,325 stars as read on November 3, 2026.

Licence / cost — read this carefully: The repo is Apache 2.0, but do not describe it as simply free. Its README's current installer flow asks for a browser sign-in and provisions a "claude-mem observer" with a 30-day free trial, falling back to your Anthropic plan afterwards, with an opt-out via --provider / CLAUDE_MEM_ONLINE_OPTIN=false. The code is open source; the hosted observer is a trial-then-plan arrangement.

9. mcp-builder (Anthropic, official)

What it does: A "guide for creating high-quality MCP servers to integrate external APIs and services" — it walks Claude through building Model Context Protocol servers in Python or TypeScript, following the official patterns.

Who it's for: Builders who want Claude to act on their own tools and data. If a skill is how Claude learns a job, an MCP server is how Claude reaches the systems the job touches — and this is Anthropic's own pattern for building that connector.

Where to get it: The skills/mcp-builder folder in github.com/anthropics/skills.

Licence: Apache 2.0, per the official repo baseline for non-document skills.

10. awesome-claude-skills — ComposioHQ

What it does: A large community collection whose README describes "a comprehensive and curated list of 1000+ production ready and practical Claude Skills and Plugins." That 1,000+ figure is the repo's own claim — it was not independently counted in our research, so treat it as their number, not a verified census. Creator-relevant folders listed on its page include content-research-writer, lead-research-assistant, competitive-ads-extractor, twitter-algorithm-optimizer, video-downloader, invoice-organizer, meeting-insights-analyzer and tailored-resume-generator.

Who it's for: Browsing breadth — when you want to see what kinds of skills exist for a task before committing to one source.

Where to get it: github.com/ComposioHQ/awesome-claude-skills — 78,637 stars as read on November 3, 2026.

Licence / cost: Apache 2.0 badge in its README. One caution: its promoted "connect-apps" plugin requires a Composio API key (its README points to a free key at dashboard.composio.dev). The list itself is free; the connected-actions layer is a third-party service.

11. awesome-claude-skills — travisvn

What it does: "A curated list of awesome Claude Skills, resources, and tools for customizing Claude AI workflows — particularly Claude Code," with getting-started paths for Claude.ai, Claude Code and the API, plus security and vetting guidance for checking a skill before you install it.

Who it's for: Non-developers and first-timers. Of everything on this page, this directory is the safest discovery route if you should not be installing random SKILL.md folders unvetted — it teaches the vetting habit, not just the links.

Where to get it: github.com/travisvn/awesome-claude-skills — 15,684 stars as read on November 3, 2026.

Licence: No licence was shown in the repo details read for this roundup — check the repo itself before reusing its content.

12. Brand & Comms pack — brand-guidelines / internal-comms / doc-coauthoring (Anthropic, official)

What it does: Three official skills for the writing-and-brand side of a business. brand-guidelines applies Anthropic's official brand colors and typography to artifacts — read it as a pattern to adapt with your own brand. internal-comms writes internal communications like status reports, newsletters, and FAQs. doc-coauthoring supports collaborative document drafting. Anthropic frames this part of its set as spanning "creative applications… to enterprise workflows (communications, branding, etc.)."

Who it's for: Small teams and solo operators who publish under a brand and write the same status updates, newsletters and docs every week.

Where to get it: The skills/brand-guidelines, skills/internal-comms and skills/doc-coauthoring folders in github.com/anthropics/skills. The same official set also includes creator-friendly skills worth a look: canvas-design, algorithmic-art, slack-gif-creator, theme-factory, web-artifacts-builder and webapp-testing.

Licence: Apache 2.0, per the official repo baseline for non-document skills.

A short security note

Skills are not just prompts. As the travisvn directory warns, "skills can execute arbitrary code in Claude's environment" — a skill can ship scripts, and Claude can run them. That is what makes skills powerful, and it is also the risk.

  • Install only from sources you trust — start with Anthropic's official repo and named publishers you can verify, the way you would with any software.
  • Read the SKILL.md and any scripts before installing a community skill, especially one shared as a bare link in a comment, chat or social post.
  • Be extra careful with skills that ask for sign-ins, API keys or accounts — check what service you are actually connecting, and what happens when a trial ends.

If a skill's publisher, licence or behaviour is unclear, skip it. There are 19 official skills and several large, reputable community packs above; you do not need the mystery one.

FAQ

What is a Claude Skill?

In Anthropic's own words, skills are folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that Claude loads dynamically to improve performance on specialized tasks. Each skill is a folder built around a SKILL.md file, and Claude pulls it in when a task matches what the skill covers.

How do I install Anthropic's official skills?

In Claude Code, run /plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills, then /plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills or /plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills. The example skills are also already available to paid plans in Claude.ai, and pre-built and custom skills can be used through the Claude API.

Are Claude Skills free and open source?

It depends on the skill. Many skills in Anthropic's official repo are open source under Apache 2.0, but the document skills (docx, pdf, pptx, xlsx) are source-available, not open source. Community packs vary: Superpowers and mattpocock/skills are MIT, while claude-mem is Apache 2.0 but its hosted observer involves a sign-in and a 30-day trial, so it is not simply free.

How many official skills does Anthropic publish?

The official anthropics/skills repo listed exactly 19 skills as read on November 3, 2026, including the document skills, skill-creator, frontend-design, mcp-builder, brand-guidelines, internal-comms and doc-coauthoring. The repo itself had 186,970 stars on that date.

Is it safe to install any Claude Skill I find?

No. Skills can execute arbitrary code in Claude's environment, a warning the travisvn curated directory states plainly. Install only from sources you trust, read what a skill does before adding it, and treat random SKILL.md folders shared in comments or chats the way you would treat any unknown software.
