Perplexity AI Review: Is Pro Worth $20 a Month?

Updated: November 2026 · 7 min read · By the CreatorSprout team

Review based on Perplexity's published pricing and help pages plus independent plan comparisons checked in September–October 2026 — we have not tested Perplexity hands-on. Plan limits change often and Perplexity no longer publishes exact caps for several tiers, so treat every limit below as "as reported" and verify at checkout before subscribing. Perplexity crossed a billion monthly queries in early 2026, and it did it with a simple idea: every claim gets a footnote. That idea is why researchers, students and creators keep it open next to Google — and why its pricing deserves a closer look than the $20 headline.

What Perplexity AI is

Ask Perplexity a question and it searches the web in real time, reads the sources, and writes a direct answer with numbered inline citations and a sources panel. You can then ask follow-up questions in the same thread, and it keeps the context. That is the whole product in one sentence — and it is a different job from a general chatbot, which answers from training data and may or may not browse.

Perplexity does not train one house model for its answer engine. Instead it routes queries across models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and others, plus its own Sonar models, which are built for search. On the free plan, Perplexity picks the model for you. On Pro, you pick.

Over the last year the product has grown from a search box into a research platform: Deep Research for multi-step reports, Projects (formerly Spaces) for persistent workspaces with your own files, Assets (formerly Labs) for turning research into reports, spreadsheets, dashboards and simple apps, the Comet browser, and Perplexity Computer, an agent that works inside desktop apps. Searches are covered by the subscription; agent work runs on credits. That split matters, and it is where most pricing confusion comes from.

Plans and pricing: Free vs Pro vs Max

Perplexity's published pricing, as reported in September–October 2026:

PlanPriceWhat you actually get
Free$0Standard searches with citations, a very limited daily allowance of Pro searches, limited file uploads, Comet browser download. No credit card required.
ProStarts around $20/mo, or $200/yr (~$16.67/mo)Extended Pro Search access, model choice, Deep Research, image and video generation, up to 50 file uploads per Project, 4,000 one-time Computer bonus credits (expire in 30 days).
Education ProStarts around $10/moSame Pro features at half price for verified students and educators (SheerID verification).
MaxStarts around $200/mo, or $2,000/yrThe highest usage limits, the full model list including the newest frontier models, 10,000 monthly Computer credits plus a 35,000 one-time bonus, and priority access to new features.
EnterpriseStarts around $40/seat/moTeam controls, SSO, admin tools, and training-data guarantees for organizations.

The number that decides the purchase is the one Perplexity leaves blank: it no longer publishes an exact Pro Search allowance for Free or Pro. Its own plan comparison says Free gets a "very limited amount" and Pro gets "extended access." Third-party trackers that read Perplexity's usage feed estimate Pro at a few hundred Pro searches a week, but that is an estimate, not a promise. If your workflow depends on a specific daily volume, confirm the current cap in your account before paying — it changes.

One more pricing note: the refund window reported for paid plans is short — 24 hours on monthly billing, 72 hours on annual. Do not subscribe "to try it" on annual billing and expect a leisurely refund.

Comet: the free AI browser

Comet is Perplexity's Chromium-based browser, free to download for everyone since October 2025 — no Pro subscription needed. Its built-in assistant can answer questions about the page you are on, summarize a tab, or act on your behalf.

The catch is the same credits split as the main product: the assistant is included, but agent actions inside Comet are limited by plan — none on Free beyond basic assistance, monthly limits on Pro and Max. If you only want an AI sidebar in a browser, Comet costs nothing. If you want it booking, buying and filling forms for you, that is where the plan limits bite.

Model choice: the real Pro upgrade

On Free, Perplexity's "Best" mode picks the model. On Pro, you choose from several frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity's own Sonar line for each query. Recent plan comparisons report that Pro covers most — but not all — of Perplexity's listed search models, with the very newest flagship models reserved for Max.

Does model choice matter? For factual research, less than you would think: the retrieval and citation layer does most of the work, and the model mostly shapes how the answer is written. Where it matters is reasoning-heavy queries and Deep Research, where a stronger model produces a better-structured report. If you only ever ask "what is X" questions, model choice alone does not justify $20.

Deep Research, Projects and Computer

  • Deep Research: multi-step research that reads many sources and returns a structured report in minutes. Available on Pro and Max; free users get only a very small monthly allowance.
  • Projects: persistent workspaces where you upload your own files (PDFs, documents, spreadsheets) and ask questions against them. Pro allows up to 50 files per Project, versus a limited allowance on Free.
  • Assets (formerly Labs): give Perplexity a multi-step task and get a finished artifact — a report, spreadsheet, dashboard, chart or simple web app — instead of just a chat reply. Most compelling when the final artifact is what you actually need.
  • Perplexity Computer: an agent that carries out multi-step tasks inside desktop apps, priced on credits rather than included in the subscription. Pro's one-time 4,000 bonus credits expire after 30 days, and Max adds 10,000 monthly credits — so budget for Computer separately if you plan to use it heavily.
  • Image and video generation: included on Pro (with monthly limits) and expanded on Max.

The honest caveats

  • Citations are not accuracy. A cited answer can still be wrong — the citation may not actually support the claim, or the source itself may be wrong. For anything that matters (health, money, legal, academic work), open the source and check.
  • We haven't tested it. Every limit and feature here comes from Perplexity's published pages and independent plan comparisons, not from our own runs. Plan details shift without notice.
  • The caps are unpublished. "Extended access" is not a number. Heavy users have reported hitting weekly limits on Pro; light users never will. Your mileage depends on volume you cannot verify before paying.
  • Computer work costs extra. The agent tools run on credits, and Pro's bonus credits expire in 30 days. Do not buy Pro expecting unlimited agentic work.
  • It is not a writing chatbot. Perplexity is built for answers, not open-ended drafting, brainstorming or long creative work. If that is your main use, a general chatbot at the same $20 price is the better buy.
  • Training-data opt-out is a paid perk. Reported plan tables list AI-training opt-out on Pro and Max, not on Free.

Who should pay, and who should not

Pay for Pro if: you research daily for work or study, you want Deep Research reports and file uploads, you want to pick the model, or you are a verified student (Education Pro at around $10/mo is the obvious buy).

Stay on Free if: you ask a few questions a day, you mostly want quick cited answers, or you just want the Comet browser — all of that costs nothing.

Consider Max only if: you run research or Computer agent work at a scale where Pro's weekly limits actually block you, or you need the newest models the day they land. At around $200/mo, it is a business expense, not a curiosity purchase.

A practical test before paying: count your Pro searches on the free plan for a week. If you keep hitting the daily allowance, Pro removes that friction. If you never hit it, $20 buys you features you will not use.

Verdict

Perplexity is the best citation-first research tool most creators will use — and the free plan is enough for most of them. Pro at around $20/month is a fair price for daily researchers who want model choice, Deep Research and file uploads, but the unpublished caps mean you should subscribe monthly first, measure your actual usage for a month, and only then decide whether annual billing or Max makes sense. Start free, count your searches, and let your own volume make the decision.

FAQ

What is Perplexity AI?

Perplexity AI is an answer engine: you ask a question and it searches the live web, then returns a synthesized answer with inline citations to its sources, instead of a list of links. Paid plans add model choice, Deep Research, file uploads, image and video generation, and an agentic Computer tool.

How much does Perplexity Pro cost?

Perplexity Pro starts around $20 per month, or $200 per year (about $16.67 per month). Verified students and educators can get Education Pro for around $10 per month. Max costs around $200 per month and is aimed at heavy users. Verify the total at checkout, as regional pricing and limits change.

Is Perplexity free?

Yes. The free plan gives you standard AI searches with citations, a very limited daily allowance of Pro searches, and the free Comet browser download, with no credit card required. It is genuinely usable for everyday questions; the paid plans mainly remove limits and add model choice and research tools.

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT or Google search?

It depends on the job. For research questions where you want cited, current answers, Perplexity's citation-first format beats a plain chatbot and is faster than opening ten Google results. For open-ended writing, brainstorming or long creative work, a general chatbot like ChatGPT is usually the better tool.

Is the Comet browser free?

Yes. Comet, Perplexity's Chromium-based AI browser, has been free to download for everyone since October 2025. You do not need a Pro subscription to use it, though agent features inside Comet are limited by plan, with Pro and Max unlocking more.
