What Midjourney is in 2026
Midjourney turns text descriptions — and now reference images — into images and short videos. You type a prompt, it returns a grid of images, and you upscale, vary, or edit the ones you like. It started in 2022 as a Discord-only bot, which is why older guides still describe slash commands like /imagine as the whole product. That era is over: the web app at midjourney.com is now the main way in, with Discord still supported as an alternative, and every plan can use both.
It is also worth saying what Midjourney is not. It is not a general AI assistant with image generation bolted on — it does one thing, images (plus short video), and it does it with an artistic bias. Its default output leans beautiful: dramatic light, considered composition, texture. That bias is exactly why creators keep paying for it, and exactly why it is the wrong tool when you need a precise diagram, an exact logo, or text rendered letter-perfect.
V8.2 and the Edit Model: what actually changed
The current default model is V8.2, released as the default on July 24, 2026. Midjourney frames it as an aesthetics, image-quality, and personalization update over V8.1 rather than a speed release: bolder and more sophisticated-looking images, far fewer random low-quality frames slipping into a grid, and personalization that reads your taste better — especially on profiles with many rated images.
V8.2 inherits the V8.1 feature surface: standard jobs roughly four to five times faster than earlier versions, native 2K HD output (2048px) without a separate upscaling step, Raw mode for closer prompt adherence, style references, image prompts and weights, moodboards, and the --exp experimental aesthetics parameter. HD costs 1.3 GPU minutes per job against 0.8 for standard definition (1024px), so resolution is a real budget choice, not a free toggle.
The bigger 2026 change is the Edit Model, opened to everyone for testing on August 27, 2026. It does three things that replace three older tools (Omni Reference, Character Reference, and Retexture): it changes an existing image from a written instruction ("show this from the front"), it generates from up to four reference images (a character, an object, a setting), and it powers inpainting and outpainting in the Editor. Midjourney's own docs note targeted edits now change only the selected pixels, so repeated edits don't degrade the image. One honest caveat from the docs: the Edit Model does not yet work with --tile or Remix. For working creators, this is the feature that turns Midjourney from a slot machine into a workbench — you can finally iterate on the image you almost like instead of re-rolling until luck lands.
Video is in the same package: image-to-video clips of about 5 seconds, extendable to around 21 seconds, at 480p or 720p. On Standard and above, video can run in Fast mode; unlimited Relax-mode video needs Pro or Mega.
How it works: web app first, Discord optional
- Sign up with a Google or Discord account on midjourney.com, pick a plan, and generate in the browser — no Discord server required.
- The Create bar replaces most commands. Visual sliders and controls handle aspect ratio, stylization, weirdness, and version, so you don't need to memorize parameter syntax to get started. Power users can still use parameters.
- Organize with folders and search. The web app keeps your library searchable and sortable — a real improvement over scrolling a Discord feed to find last week's image.
- Personalization learns your taste. Rate images and Midjourney builds a profile (
--p) that steers future generations toward your aesthetic. V7 profiles carry over to V8.2, though there is still no global V8 profile. - Draft mode for cheap exploration. Generate fast, low-cost drafts, then promote only the winners to full quality — the sensible way to burn less GPU time on experiments.
Pricing: four plans, one GPU-hour meter
Midjourney sells time, not images. Every plan buys a monthly allowance of Fast GPU hours — priority generation time — and Standard and above add unlimited Relax mode, a slower queue that never runs out. Extra Fast time costs around $4 per hour on any plan, and Fast hours do not roll over to the next month. Annual billing cuts each plan by about 20%. Prices below are from Midjourney's published plan comparison, verified against multiple independent reviews in October 2026 — confirm at checkout, as plans change.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Fast GPU time | Relax mode | Stealth (private) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ~$10 | ~$8 | 3.3 hours | No | No |
| Standard | ~$30 | ~$24 | 15 hours | Unlimited images | No |
| Pro | ~$60 | ~$48 | 30 hours | Images + SD video | Yes |
| Mega | ~$120 | ~$96 | 60 hours | Images + SD video | Yes |
The plan logic is straightforward. Basic is a trial in all but name: 3.3 Fast hours and no Relax fallback means a moderately active week can empty it, and then you wait for renewal or buy more time. Standard is the real starting point — 15 Fast hours plus unlimited Relax images means you never hit a hard wall, you just get slower. Pro is the privacy plan: Stealth mode, 12 concurrent Fast jobs, and Relax video. Mega is the same as Pro with double the Fast time and higher video concurrency — studios and very heavy users only.
One cost detail that trips people up: a standard job costs about 0.8 GPU minutes and an HD job about 1.3, so a Standard plan's 15 Fast hours is roughly a thousand standard jobs — plenty for most creators, but HD-everything and video burn it much faster. Track GPU minutes per finished image, not the headline price, when you compare it with credit-based tools.
Where Midjourney still wins
- Image beauty, full stop. Across independent 2026 reviews, Midjourney's default look — lighting, texture, composition — is still the one other generators are measured against. If the brief is "make it gorgeous," this is the shortest path.
- Style and character consistency. Style references, moodboards, personalization profiles, and now the Edit Model's up-to-four reference images make a repeatable visual direction realistic — the difference between one nice image and a coherent series.
- The Edit Model changes the workflow. Instruction-based edits and inpainting mean you fix the image you have instead of gambling on a new grid. For client work, that is the difference between billable and frustrating.
- Speed and resolution. V8-class jobs run several times faster than older versions, and 2K HD output arrives without a separate upscaler step.
- Video in the same subscription. Short image-to-video clips without a second tool or second bill — modest, but genuinely useful for social posts.
The honest limitations
- No free tier, no free trial. The first image costs at least ~$10/month. A limited trial exists only in the separate niji·journey mobile app. If you just want to try AI images, free tiers elsewhere (Gemini's Nano Banana, ChatGPT's image tool) cost nothing.
- The GPU-hour meter is a real budget. Fast hours don't roll over, HD and video burn them faster, and Basic has no Relax safety net. Casual users can pay $10 and still run dry mid-project.
- Public by default. On Basic and Standard, your images appear in the public gallery. Client work, unreleased products, or anything private needs Pro's Stealth mode — a $60/month floor for privacy.
- Text and precision are not its strengths. V8 handles quoted text better than older versions, but for exact logos, precise typography, or diagrams, a chat-based image tool or a real designer is still the safer bet.
- Content moderation and no public API. Midjourney moderates generations, and there is no general public API — automating it outside the official web app or Discord is against its terms. Teams planning API-driven pipelines should look elsewhere.
- Your generations feed the machine. Midjourney's own policy summary notes prompts, images, and preference data from user interactions are used in model training unless Stealth applies. Don't generate anything you wouldn't want in a training set on a public plan.
Commercial use and privacy
Commercial use is allowed on every plan under Midjourney's General Commercial Terms — you don't need Pro to sell work made with it. The exception is scale: companies with more than $1 million in gross annual revenue must use Pro or Mega. The practical privacy line is the one above: Stealth mode (Pro, ~$60/month) is what keeps your images out of the public gallery. If you make client assets or unreleased product visuals, budget for Pro, not Basic.
Verdict: who should pay, who should skip
Midjourney in 2026 is still the best pure image generator for creators who care how things look — V8.2's default beauty, the Edit Model's real editing, and a web app that finally feels like a tool rather than a chatroom make it the strongest visual workbench in its class. The honest price of admission is Standard at around $30/month (around $24 on annual billing), because Basic's missing Relax mode turns a slow week into a dead end, and the honest price of privacy is Pro at around $60/month. Skip it if you only make images occasionally — free tiers from Gemini and ChatGPT cover that now — or if you need exact text, logos, or an API. But if images are your product, your portfolio, or your daily content, Midjourney still earns its subscription.
FAQ
What is Midjourney?
Midjourney is a subscription AI image and video generator. You describe an image in text (or from reference images) and it returns a grid of images to upscale, vary, or edit. It runs through its own web app at midjourney.com and, originally, a Discord bot; Discord is no longer required.
How much does Midjourney cost?
Four plans: Basic starts around $10/month, Standard around $30/month, Pro around $60/month, and Mega around $120/month, with roughly 20% off on annual billing. Extra Fast GPU time costs around $4 per hour. Verify the current price at checkout, as plans change.
Is Midjourney free?
No. Midjourney has no free plan and no ongoing free trial on its website or Discord. The cheapest way in is the Basic plan at around $10/month.
What is the current Midjourney model?
V8.2, the default since July 24, 2026 — an aesthetics, image-quality, and personalization update over V8.1, with faster standard jobs and native 2K HD output. It works with the Edit Model, which edits images from written instructions and generates from up to four reference images.
Can I use Midjourney images commercially?
Yes, on every plan under Midjourney's General Commercial Terms. Companies with more than $1 million in gross annual revenue must use the Pro or Mega plan. Note that images are public by default on Basic and Standard — private Stealth mode requires Pro or Mega.
Is Midjourney better than ChatGPT image generation?
For pure image beauty, most reviewers still rank Midjourney first — its default look is more artistic and photographic. ChatGPT's image tool is easier for exact text, logos, and edits inside a chat, and it has a free tier. Choose Midjourney for art direction; choose ChatGPT for quick, precise, everyday images.
