Launch coverage based on OpenAI's announcement and press reporting — we have not tested this hands-on. Details verified October 2026; OpenAI's help center is the final word on plan availability. No affiliate links in this article.

The context matters: this lands after OpenAI shut down its own Atlas browser in July 2026, so the extension is now ChatGPT's main route into the browser — and into direct competition with Google's Gemini features inside Chrome.

What actually changed

The biggest change to the ChatGPT Chrome extension since launch splits into two modes:

Chat reads your tabs. You tag Chrome in the ChatGPT web or desktop app, and the assistant gathers information across your open tabs. OpenAI's demo asked ChatGPT to compare three sofa listings open in separate tabs — it pulled specifications, prices, and delivery details from each page and summarized the differences, without the user copying a single line of text.

Work controls your tabs. The assistant acts inside them: collecting vendor pricing and features from several tabs into a comparison spreadsheet, filling out a registration form from an event brief (stopping before submission), comparing contractors and drafting an email to the chosen one, downloading files, adding appointments to personal or work calendars, and organizing a cluttered row of tabs into tidy topic groups. These actions run in the background while you keep browsing other tabs.

There's also a persistent side chat panel beside the page you're viewing, with your full ChatGPT conversation history available while you browse.

Chat vs Work at a glance

Which browsers?Chrome via the Chrome Web Store; Edge, Brave, and Opera supported, Vivaldi via the desktop app

Setup and availability

Setup runs through the extension from the Chrome Web Store, connected to ChatGPT's web or desktop app. OpenAI says the extension is available across all ChatGPT plans. Reporting is mixed on whether Work-mode actions need a paid tier — one outlet reports Work actions require Plus or higher, while others don't specify — so check OpenAI's help center for your plan before counting on Work. The extension's Chrome Web Store listing reportedly shows around 7 million users.

Like ChatGPT itself, this is still rolling out, so not every account or region may see the new modes on day one. If you're comparing assistants in the browser, our ChatGPT vs Claude breakdown is worth a read, and Google's own agent ambitions are covered in our Google Deep review.

Permissions and privacy: read this twice

This is the section that decides whether you install it. To do its job, the extension needs broad permissions: reading and modifying site data, managing tabs and downloads. OpenAI's permission model works like this:

  • ChatGPT asks permission before referencing browser history or managing downloads.
  • You get per-site prompts plus allow/block lists.
  • A global "always allow for all sites" option is explicitly labeled as higher risk.
  • By default, ChatGPT asks before interacting with a new website.

The trade-off: because the extension runs inside your logged-in browser session, it can act on services where you're already signed in — Gmail, LinkedIn, Salesforce are the examples cited in reporting. That's the productivity superpower, and it's also the risk surface. An agent acting on signed-in pages can only be as trustworthy as the page content it reads, so review anything with consequences (form submissions, sent messages) before it's final.

What it means for creators

Creators live in tab chaos — product research, sponsor comparisons, gear roundups, grant applications. The parts of this update that matter most to a creator workflow:

  • Research comparisons: ask ChatGPT to compare pricing and features across open product tabs instead of manually building the sheet. Useful for affiliate research and gear buying guides like our best AI writing tools roundup.
  • Outreach drafting: compare contractor or sponsor tabs, then have Work draft the email to the chosen one.
  • Tab organization: anyone ending a research day with 40 open tabs gets a one-command tidy-up.
  • Admin offload: form fills, file downloads, and calendar adds are the small frictions that eat a creator's afternoon.

The honest caveat: verify what it produces. A comparison spreadsheet built from live pages is only as good as the pages it read, and form fills stop before submission for a reason — check before you click send.

Verdict

This is the biggest change to the ChatGPT extension since launch, and it redraws the browser battlefield: ChatGPT's agent now sits inside the world's dominant browser, opposite Google's Gemini features (webpage summaries, cross-tab comparisons, Auto Browse). For creators on Chrome, it's worth enabling — just read the permission prompts, use per-site grants instead of "always allow," and review anything the agent touches that has consequences.

Bottom line: Chat reads your tabs, Work acts in them. One extension, two new superpowers — installed in minutes, gated by the permission prompts you should actually read.

FAQ

What is the ChatGPT Chrome tabs update?

An October 15, 2026 update to the ChatGPT Chrome extension. In Chat mode it reads your open tabs to answer questions and compare pages; in Work mode it controls tabs to fill forms, send messages, download files, and organize tabs.

What's the difference between Chat and Work mode?

Chat only reads — it gathers and compares information across open tabs. Work acts — it fills forms, sends messages, downloads files, and groups tabs. Both are invoked by tagging Chrome in the ChatGPT app.

Which browsers are supported?

Chrome is the primary target via the Chrome Web Store extension. Edge, Brave, and Opera are supported, and Vivaldi is reported to work via the desktop app.

Is the ChatGPT Chrome extension free?

OpenAI says the extension is available across all ChatGPT plans. Reporting is mixed on whether Work-mode actions require Plus or higher — check OpenAI's help center for your plan.

Can ChatGPT access my signed-in accounts?

The extension runs inside your logged-in browser session, so it can act on sites where you're already signed in (Gmail, LinkedIn, Salesforce are cited examples). Review the per-site permission prompts and avoid the global "always allow" option if that makes you uneasy.

Does it replace copying and pasting?

Largely, for comparison and research tasks — the assistant reads tabs directly. For anything with consequences, it stops short (e.g., fills forms but doesn't submit), so you stay in the loop.
